1 Cotton (Egypt)
The Egyptian crop is reckoned in " cantars," a cantar being equal to 98-lb. The Egyptian bale contains about 7 cantars, or 700-lb. Egypt being practically a rainless country, is dependent on the River Nile for its water supply. The river annually overflows its banks, and deposits a rich layer of silt and mud over the cotton growing lands. Within recent years a vast amount of money has been spent on perfecting an irrigation system, by which a continuous supply of water is available all the year round. This has made it possible to extend the country's cotton growing area very largely. Egyptian cotton ranks next to Sea Islands in point of quality, and is used for the world's finer cotton goods. The commercial varieties are Mitafifi, Abassi, Joanovich, Ashmouni, Nubari, Sakellaridis and Assil. Of these, Sakellaridis, a cotton of quite recent growth, is now the most important. Mitafifi (or " Brown Egyptian ") is the average quality of Egyptian cotton, having a staple of about 13/8-in, in length, and is noted for its regularity, both of length and colour. It derives its name from a village in the province of Galulbia, where it was first grown about thirty years ago. It is now cultivated in Lower Egypt and the Nile Delta. There has, in recent years, been a falling off in quality of this cotton, and it is now less extensively grown than formerly. -
2 Cotton (Uganda)
This state produces more cotton than any other country in Africa, except Egypt, and cotton is the most important crop in the colony. Cotton growing is purely a native industry. The quality is excellent and compares with some of the best American. The native cultivates a quarter to half an acre and sells the cotton to the ginning firms. Improvements in transport by rail and lake will lead to new districts being opened up. The native cultivator is being encouraged to improve his methods of farming. Uganda cotton is 11/2-in to 13/16-in. in length and is generally worth from 150 to 350 points above the price of American Middling. It is believed that this colony could produce 500,000 bales annually. -
3 Cotton (Ashmouni)
Ashmouni (or "Upper Egyptian") is one of the older cottons of Egypt, and is the poorest in quality, being weaker, more irregular and dirtier, than the other varieties. It has a staple of about 11/8-in. and is used mostly for the coarser wefts. Recently, complaints have been made regarding the mixing of this cotton with Mitafifi, which reduces the quality of the Mitafifi and produces a deteriorated seed for sowing purposes. -
4 Egyptian Cotton
Second only in quality to Sea Islands, and is well adapted for spinning into fine counts of high quality. It is used largely in Bolton and district. The production of this cotton is given in cantars (98-lb. to 100-lb.). Bales of Egyptian cotton are about 750-lb. There are many varieties obtained from Egypt and the Sudan, and the average crop is about one million bales of 700 to 725-lb. each. The varieties of Egyptian cotton are as follows: -

5 Hindi Cotton
(1) A variety of short staple, reddish brown cotton grown in Mesopotamia. (2) An undesirable type of cotton in Egypt, having a coarse, short and weak staple of pure white colour, which often contaminates the better Egyptian stock and depreciates its value. -

7 Gossypium
The generic name of the cotton plant, of which there are four species: - G. Arboream - A perennial tree growing 15 feet to 20 feet high. Found in India, China, Arabia and Egypt, and produces a good quality of cotton. The plant is considered sacred in India, where it has the names Nurmai and Deo Parati. G. Barbadense - This is the famous Sea Islands cotton, now grown almost entirely in the British West Indies. The plant is a native of Barbadoes and grows 6 feet to 15 feet high (see Sea Islands). G. Hirsutum - Grows about 6 feet high, mostly in the Southern States of America, and is known variously as Uplands, Mobile, New Orleans, Texas, Boweds, etc. G. Herbaceum - Grows 4 feet to 6 feet high, in Egypt, India, China and Asia Minor. Short staple Egyptian is of this species. -

A cotton grown in Egypt, named after Makko Bey who grew the plant from East Indian seed for its flower, in his garden at Bulac without knowing its industrial value until Jumel called his attention to it. It was the first cotton cultivated in Egypt - its place is now taken by Ashmouni. -
11 Union Greys
Shirting fabrics composed of cotton warp and union weft which may contain from 5 per cent up to 50 per cent of wool and the remainder cotton. The wool is dyed before it is mixed with the cotton and spun into weft, which gives the cloth the appearance of having been made from dyed yarns. A fair example is made 31-in., 60 yards, 36 ends and 44 picks per inch, 20's cotton warp, 7's union weft (40 per cent wool), 19-lb. After weaving, the cloth is raised only and is ready for wear. Shipped to Egypt, the Continent and much used in the Home and Colonial trade. -
12 Mummy Cloth
A fabric resembling crepe, composed of silk warp and wool weft in the best qualities, with cotton warp in lower grades, and used as mourning in black because of its lustreless surface. Fine closely woven plain linen fabric used in ancient Egypt for wrapping mummies. The best examples have two-fold warp and single weft and two or three times as many warp ends as picks. One example has 140 ends and 64 picks per inch, 100's linen warp and weft. One wrapping cloth from a mummy contained 540 threads of warp per inch. Unbleached, plain woven, heavy linen or cotton fabrics, used as a ground cloth for embroidery is known as mummy. A crinkled lustreless black cloth made with cotton warp and wool weft is called momie cloth. -
13 Cantar
A measure in which the raw cotton grown in Egypt and some other countries is given. At Cairo a cantar is 45 lb., while in Syria it is 500-lb. The Egyptian cotton crop is based on cantars of 98-lb., thus a bale contains 7 cantars or about 700 lb. -
14 Jeans
Cotton cloth generally dyed or bleached and used for linings. The weave is the 3-shaft twill, weft face, made in widths 27-in. to 44-in. A good shipping cloth for Egypt, Persia and other markets is 42-in., 52 ends and 88 picks per inch, 36's T., 28's W. If made warp face it is known as a drill and used for children's suitings, corsets, boot linings, etc. A good example of this is 31-in., 100 yards, 81 ends and 62 picks per inch, 18's T., 28's twist-way weft, 281/2-lb. Jeans, Jeanettes, Reversed Jeanettes and Cashmeres (cotton) are all made with the 2 & 1 twill weave, and are very similar. Jeans are the heaviest cloths, Jeanettes and Cashmeres are the same cloth, and when twist-way weft is used the cloth is a Reversed Jeanette. Standard makes of each term are: -

A fine cotton cloth of muslin weight, plain weave, yarns of good quality Egyptian cotton, made in Egypt and used for turbans originally. The term is now applied to imported cloth of a similar character, one quality is made 92 ends and 84 picks per inch, 110's T., 90's W., combed Egyptian yarns. -
19 Trouserings
Coloured striped or checked cotton fabrics used in India, the Philippines, Egypt, and many South American markets for trousers. Generally made from coloured yarns in drab, black, brown, and blue, from 27-in. to 48-in. wide, plain and twill weaves. The cloths are sometimes raised on the back. A fair style is 64 ends and 48 picks per inch, 30's warp, 24's weft. Another cloth has 90 ends and 84 picks per inch, 36's warp, 32's weft; and a better cloth 80 ends and 74 picks per inch, 2/40's warp, 16's weft. -
